A Few Questions with Michael Angelo
The Powder Group’s Michael DeVellis chat’s with stylist, makeup artist, salon owner, photographer, philanthropist and director Michael Angelo about what turns him on about beauty and why he loves what he does…

What was your first memorable work as a stylist?
“Work” would mean that I was paid, right? I did so much hair & makeup growing up, family, friends, Barbies. But the first haircut I did in a salon has to me the first memorable. It was a man’s hair and was really curly and thick and he wanted a “shape”. I always think that’s such a funny request – verything has a shape! Anyway, I was so lost in that cut and dripping with sweat from anxiety and I was talking a mile a minute about how I’m just a sweater & trying to play it off like all my haircuts always end with a sweat-shower. As if I had done SO many cuts.!

How did you know that the beauty industry was where you wanted to be?
I’m still not sure that it is – sometimes it’s a love/hate thing!

What are the things about working in the industry that you love?
I love that doing hair and makeup lets me get close to diverse people, arts and crafts so that I can learn by observation. Half my photography repertoire has been learned by watching the greats in action. I can plan a vacation in Europe from behind the chair in the salon just by asking the right questions of the right people. I discover restaurants, music, art and causes just by going to work. It’s pretty awesome.

What should someone who is looking to develop a career in the industry know before getting into the business?
It’s A LOT of work. And doing the hair and makeup are just the tip of the iceberg.

How do you continue to grow your career as a stylist and business owner?
I’m very curious. I always want to discover newness – people, ideas, products – and then I want to share it! That’s where natural growth comes from.

Do you have a project that you’ve done that you are especially proud of?
I’m really proud of The Lipstick Portraits, a non-profit marketing campaign that I dreamt up to raise awareness about the global epidemic of sex trafficking.
I worked MY ASS OFF to make that happen. I produced it, I shot it, I did most of the hair, makeup and styling for it, I edited it, I retouched it and then I had to get it out into the world. I did the same for Wonderland, but the difference was Wonderland is a for-profit venture, so there’s a carrot there. If you nail this you will be rewarded. With The Lipstick Portraits the only reward I could count on was the hope that someone else would care and be motivated to do their own thing to help. The response has been really wonderful, which makes it so worth it!

What makes Wonderland Beauty Parlor unique?
Me! Well, me and my team. I swear it feels more like The Muppet Show every day. I think we all share the common belief that persona and personal style come before trend and our job is to help bring out a guests persona even if her persona is trend addict!
